Further articles on outsourcing newspaper production

“Paying to Print” in the March issue of Editor and Publisher refers to a number of outsourcing options for newspapers looking to reduce costs and/or avoid the high costs of capital investments.  There is a reference in the article to our “insourcing” model where Color Web Printers is a separate cost center from The Gazette.  Within this structure we charge back The Gazette for printing and inserting production as if they were a commercial print customer and utilize a standard rate card for production services.

Outsourcing Newspaper Production

In the February 2008 Presstime (Newspaper Association of America’s magazine) the Back Talk column was adapted from a commentary written by Paul Ginocchio on NAA’s Imagining the Future of Newspapers blog.  Ginocchio is an analyst with Deutsche Bank in San Francisco.  In the article Ginocchio stated, “printing/distribution is often viewed as a key competitive advantage allowing newspapers to generate some of the highest cost per thousand locally.  But as household penetration declines, operational leverage on these high fixed cost base services works afainst the news enterprise.  Outsource these functions or partner to reduce costs.”
